  1. Book your trip between September and April

The aurora is most active during the fall and winter months, when the nights are longest and the skies are clear. The best time to see the aurora is usually between late September and early April. However, it's important to note that the aurora is a natural phenomenon and can't be predicted with 100% accuracy. It's best to check the aurora forecast and plan your trip accordingly. There are several websites and apps that provide aurora forecasts, so you can get a good idea of when the best viewing times will be. We recommend the “Aurora” app which can be downloaded on your mobile device.

2. Best locations to see the Aurora in Talkeetna

When the aurora is “out” in Talkeetna, you can see it from almost anywhere. We recommend finding a spot that faces North or Northeast, has an open view of the sky and with minimal light pollution. Our favorite spots are at the viewpoint pull off right before town, at the river bank at the end of Main street or on our many frozen lakes and swamps.

Please be cautious of where you are exploring and note that trail conditions vary frequently. We always recommend scouting the location during the day to make sure it is safe.

3. Pay close attention

Sometimes the aurora borealis appears as just a faint green glow in the sky. Look closely and you might see some movement. When there is a strong aurora presence, witness as it dances magically through the night sky.

We have seen some of the best and most vivid aurora shows in downtown Talkeetna. Remember to plan your trip during the fall and winter months, check the aurora forecast, and hope for clear skies.
